THEN CAME THE FLAMES
Stubbornness can’t cure the Rot, but Riley refuses to accept this.
When her sister falls ill with a sickness that rots her magic from the inside out, Riley uses illegal illusions to steal medicine from her school in an attempt to save her. But Riley’s talent for complicated, outlawed magic attracts the attention of the government officials she blames for her sister’s condition, and they want her to use her magic in their service. Riley must decide if she’s bold enough to defy the Council–risking not only her magical education, but her sister’s life.
THE FIRST WITCH
As the last medium in her line, a life guarding malevolent, wish-granting spirits is all Mare has ever known. But she wants more than endless containment rituals in a remote forest graveyard. Mare brokers a deal, setting up her only non-dead friend as the First Witch in more than a century. The spirits grant wishes in exchange for a magical tithe, while Mare and her friend pocket the monetary fee. Once she has enough cash, they’ll flee.
But the legend of the First Witch grows, and Mare’s in over her head. Visitors flood her sleepy town—dangerous folk who would claim Mare’s power for their own. And, to make matters worse, the spirits are growing stronger. Mare races to untether her bloodline from the spirits and fix the mess she’s created, before they drag her to an early grave and remind everyone why they were imprisoned in the first place.
